THE THIRD NAI

WHAT IS A THIRD NAIL?

When you hear about the Third Nail, it means the amount of nails your house has holding the Trusses. Houses in Florida build prior to the year 2002 where only required by code to have two nails attached in the straps.

BENEFIT OF ADDING A THIRD NAIL

Why is this important to know? Insurance companies offer up to 30% discount on your premium for adding a Third Nail to your roof. But most importantly it adds an extra layer of protection to your roof in a hurricane. A Truss clip that has only two nails will only give you about 300-350 pounds of lift. A Third Nail brings that to 500-600 pounds. This can mean the difference between protection from a Category 1 hurricane to protection for a Category 4 according to study.

HOW WE ADD A THIRD NAIL

Here at Gabisa Construction, we realized that the best time to add the Third Nail was while replacing the roof. While the project is underway, we have to tear down the old shingles and underlayment which leaves the roof wood deck exposed. This gives us the opportunity to open the plywood deck around the perimeter of the house exposing the trusses. Once the trusses have been exposed, we procced to add a Third Nail to each one of the trusses and cover the opened deck again with new plywood. With this process done your home now has the added security of a Third Nail and the benefits of a lower insurance premium.
